Emergency services are the treatment of illnesses and injuries, some life-threatening, that require an urgent medical response, providing hospital treatment and transport to definitive care when necessary. The emergency department operates 24 hours a day. It specializes in emergency medicine, the acute care of patients who visit without prior appointment.
An emergency department facility charge may be incurred when a patient visits Dignity Health – St. Rose Dominican Neighborhood Hospitals’ emergency room. This fee is for the nurses, staff, pharmacists, security, equipment, and other things the patient needs while in the Emergency Room. The emergency department facility charge does not include the physician’s charges, diagnostic testing, laboratory, radiology, supplies and drugs. These are billed separately from other service providers. There are two types of charges incurred in the emergency department a facility fee and a professional fee. These fees are independent of each other, although the charges maybe for services that are interdependently provided.
Dignity Health – St. Rose Dominican Neighborhood Hospitals Emergency Department fees are based on the level of care provided. The more serious the condition is, the higher the level of care and therefore the higher the facility fee may be. Minor and simple conditions and treatments are likely to be charged a lower level if no tests or prescriptions are warranted. However, medical conditions which require tests to diagnose symptoms or imaging, may cause a higher level of care and therefore a higher level charge. The level of care is dictated by the complexity of the condition.
Please Note: The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) forbids delaying medical care services in an emergency department to discuss prices, payment or insurance coverage.
These prices are for patients without insurance coverage or uninsured patients. If you are covered by health insurance, you are strongly encouraged to consult with your insurance carrier. They should be able to assist you with determining what your financial responsibility may be based on contracted rates and your benefits for the services you may be seeking.
